Documenting Swannanoa

In July 2023, I had the privilege of joining a group of photographers to document the historic Swannanoa Palace. Through a session offered by John Plashal Photo Tours, I was able to immerse myself in the rich history and grandeur of this Gilded Age mansion. Built in 1912 by millionaire James H. Dooley as a lavish summer retreat for his wife, Sally May, Swannanoa Palace stands as a testament to opulence and architectural splendor. Perched atop the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, the palace not only boasts ornate interiors and lush gardens but also holds a significant place in history.

As we explored its corridors and captured its beauty through our lenses, the palpable sense of history and elegance enveloped us. It was a truly awe-inspiring experience to witness and photograph such a majestic and historically significant landmark. Documenting Swannanoa Palace allowed us to not only preserve its physical beauty but also capture the essence of a bygone era, ensuring that its legacy continues to be admired and appreciated by future generations.
